Question #5 of 8: How could Federal Legislation be used to support Caledon’s Healthy Horticultural Landscapes Bylaw and our campaign to reduce residential pesticide use?
Ted Alexander, Green Party of Canada The Green Party would stop subsidizing and start taxing pesticide use. We would work to extend bans on cosmetic pesticide use to all areas of the country. Murray Calder, Liberal Party of Canada Pesticides are approved for use by the federal Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA), but their application is governed by local laws such as Caledon’s Healthy Horticultural Landscapes Bylaw. In conjunction with the agricultural community, I have been working to improve the approval process for pesticides so that farmers have access to some of the newer, less harmful products. I applaud the Town of Caledon’s efforts to encourage homeowners to find greener alternatives to the cosmetic use of pesticides. The federal government has provided funding for local groups, such as the Weedgie Kidz, who are educating the public about the alternatives.
