Municipal Election Watch - 2006 In election campaigns, the Caledon Countryside Alliance (CCA) always votes for countryside, the environment and sustainability - while remaining politically neutral. In October the CCA sent all candidates running for municipal election in Caledon a list of seven questions. Read the questions below and follow the links at the bottom to find out how your candidates responded. Q1: The Town of Caledon recently approved population projections to grow to 108,000 by 2031. The recent growth strategy issued by the Provincial Government puts 27,000 acres of south Caledon into the unprotected “White Belt” and available for future growth. What is your plan for Caledon’s growth strategy? Do you envision Caledon of the future as a town or a city? Q2: What will you do to help the local agriculture community in Caledon become a stronger and more vibrant part of our economy? Q3: Caledon's Economic Development Strategy appears to be similar to our neighbour's. It is also a stated objective to have more people live and work in Caledon. With the current stock of high priced housing, how does your Economic Development Strategy plan to attract firms with high paying jobs and fit with Caledon's image and reputation? Q4: In 2003 Caledon was on the leading edge by passing the Healthy Horticultural Landscapes By-Law. As more and more municipalities have passed Pesticide By-Laws, Caledon’s appears to be lagging behind the newer by-laws. Will you support strengthening Caledon’s by-Law when it is voted on by Council in the next term? Q5: How do you think Caledon can be part of a GTA transit strategy? Q6: There appears to be a lack of housing appropriate for senior citizens and single persons. How do you propose to address this gap? Q7: The Town of Caledon has committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions from their operations and to helping members of community do the same. What is your vision for a community energy plan? |
