Q1: The Town of Caledon recently approved population projections to grow to       108,000 by 2031.  The recent growth strategy issued by the Provincial            Government puts 27,000 acres of south Caledon into the unprotected “White Belt” and available for future growth.  What is your plan for Caledon’s growth strategy? Do you envision Caledon of the future as a town or a city?

Mayoral Candidates:

Norm Calder

"Caledon  can  not  stop  growth  ….  What  we  can  do  is  control  its pace…..witness our strategy in Caledon East when we brought sewers into the area which was accomplished with the smallest pipe we could utilize back in 92/94 council term.   This purpose was to contain growth to no more than 8,000 from the current 4,000 at that time. I see Caledon remaining a TOWN !"

Garry Moore

"I believe that Caledon needs a clearer sustainable growth strategy that takes in consideration the population forecasts that is balanced by the need for residential and economic growth in order for us to sustain our existing needs and business requirements. Although the white belt has been identified for growth we must not irresponsibly use up the land when better responsible growth solutions can be found.  As Mayor I would continue to support growth at Mayfield West and adjacent to Bolton providing that new growth includes green initiatives and considers appropriate infrastructure in place up front.  Growth must be phased and I believe that Caledon should remain a Town."

Marolyn Morrison

"My growth strategy is low growth of approximately 500 to 600 building permits per year.  I will have a Planner put into the position of planning the 'white belt' and having it planned in villages so that we remain communities of communities.  The wonderful unique thing about Caledon is that we are many villages and hamlets with the rural area surrounding us.  This brings these areas together and I want that to remain.  I want people to be proud of where they live and to have an identity with their village, as we do now.  If we have this kind of growth it will give the Town the opportunity to have the infrastructure in place for the growth and it will also give us the opportunity to have monitoring programs in place to make sure that we are not degrading our environment as the communities come on board.  We will then be able to monitor and adjust if things are not improving."

"I see Caledon always as a Town made up of many, many villages and hamlets."
