Municipal Election Watch - 2006

Replies to questions from the regional and area council candidates for Ward 5 listed in alphabetical order by last name:

Q1: The Town of Caledon recently approved population projections to grow to       108,000 by 2031.  The recent growth strategy issued by the Provincial            Government puts 27,000 acres of south Caledon into the unprotected “White Belt” and available for future growth.  What is your plan for Caledon’s growth strategy? Do you envision Caledon of the future as a town or a city?

Regional Council Candidates:

Kelly Darnley

"Caledon’s growth strategy, moving forward beyond 2012, must be purposeful.  Sound planning principles for the “whitebelt” must be a priority for Caledon.  I would promote careful consideration in the long term planning for economical sustainability as a municipality, which integrates our environmental priorities. Additionally, the words ‘town’ and ‘city’ are more of a mindset than a vision.   How we behave as neighbours, as our population grows to 108,000 by 2031, is a grander goal."

"I envision the future of Caledon as a Town, due to the Oak Ridges Moraine, and the rugged topography."

Jason Payne

"I think that our growth strategy should focus on attracting clean commercial, industrial.  I think that a great market that we should be trying to attract computer manufacturers due to our proximity to the rail lines and the amount of trucking companies that have their head quarters in Bolton.  All, if any residential growth should happen along Mayfield Road. The Region of Peel and Brampton have already put the services in the ground to respond to the growth in Northern Brampton.  I currently can’t see any business case for the Town of  Caledon to allow development North of Bolton."
