Municipal Election Watch - 2006

Replies to questions from the regional and area council candidates for Ward 3 & 4 listed in alphabetical order by last name:

Q3: Caledon's Economic Development Strategy appears to be similar to our            neighbour's.  It is also a stated objective to have more people live and work in             Caledon. With the current stock of high priced housing, how does your Economic Development Strategy plan to attract firms with high paying jobs and fit with Caledon's image and reputation?

Regional Council Candidates:

Nancy Stewart

"Over the past term of Council Caledon’s Economic Development department has been very successful in attracting new firms with high paying jobs that fit with Caledon’s image and reputation. The Sardo Foods building at Mayfield & Hwy 50 is the most recent example of a leading Canadian Corporation choosing Caledon as it’s Corporate home."

Tony Viola

"I would love to see more Caledon residents live, play, and work in our beautiful Caledon, rather than fight traffic while commuting into the GTA."

"My economic development strategy is to present Caledon as the optimal town north of Vaughan, Brampton, and the GTA to work, live, and play.  Part of this plan would be my selective commercial and industrial growth strategy, lowering the tax burden and making Caledon an affordable town to live in."

"Of course, as Caledon grows and becomes a complete town, our residents will require access to transit."

Richard Whitehead

"Again, we must do a reality check here. Most of the economic future growth of Caledon is, and will be, in the Bolton area because of its access to markets through the inter-modal railway terminal, proximity to other industrial and commercial markets, the international airport and the existence of full urban services. The live / work statement for Bolton is more related to the Peel and York catchment area. “Home to work in fifteen” from Bolton includes a lot of Brampton and Vaughan. The Bolton market is not much related to the rest of Caledon except the Hwy 50 corridor. The housing issue in this area is more inter-municipal than town specific. Economic development in Bolton is largely a product of Council permitting enough fully serviced land being available and the transportation issues like the 427 extension and the Bolton By-pass being completed."

"“Caledon’s image and reputation” is a variable depending on which area of Caledon is being considered. The housing issue varies greatly depending on the area. Economic development in the rural and small settlement area is more related to home based businesses."

Area Council Candidates:

Nick DeBoer

"Our Town of Caledon Development Team has to seek out and cater to these firms.  We must offer them sites and places for their employees to live – crime free!  With our current reputation, such steps should be simple."
