Replies to questions from the regional and area council candidates for Ward 1 listed in alphabetical order by last name:

Q5: How do you think Caledon can be part of a GTA transit strategy?

Regional Council Candidates:

Richard Paterak

"I believe we can encourage our commuters to use GO services as a starter.  As we build our new communities we can create the road system that can accept transit when the density and the market pressures would make it economic.  I would only support  public transit in the built up areas of Caledon if it was financed by area specific tax levies, i.e. the taxes required to subsidize such services would only come from the residential areas that have access."

Jim Pattison

No reply.

Area Council Candidates:

Doug Beffort

"I think we continue with a connectivity strategy. We work with GO transit to assist our residents to be able to access public transit to both work and for personal reasons. I, personally, use the GO service to access Toronto on a regular basis. We need to have our new communities like Mayfield West connect to Brampton and all points from there via road and train transit. I would encourage a Caledon Taxi service but the economy of scale makes it difficult."

"We do need to encourage the present service providers (GO transit) to provide more service at off peak hours. At the moment it is just during the rush hours that we have the opportunity to make use of the transit facilities."

Tim Forester

"In Ward 1 our geography and population density are not conducive to public transport.  The best we have is a GO bus traveling down Hwy 10. However research needs to be done in providing viable public transit to commercial areas or from our more densely populated areas to GTA urban destinations."

John Martin

"Caledon must be part of the strategy only because of development in Bolton and Potentially for Mayfield West. Only in these areas is the density close to approaching the level necessary for transit or connections to transit. It is my hope that we will eventually be able to work closer to where we live."

"In the meantime its is still to our benefit to plan for the use of both the rail line through Bolton and the rail line from Brampton to Orangeville for future transit routes."

"As for transportation in general the Provincial Government and Brampton have made  a bottleneck all across the south end of Caledon. The Province needs to address this immediately."
