Municipal Election Watch - 2006 Replies to questions from the regional and area council candidates for Ward 3 & 4 listed in alphabetical order by last name: Q5: How do you think Caledon can be part of a GTA transit strategy? Regional Council Candidates: Nancy Stewart "Caledon will eventually be part of a seamless delivery of transit to GTA residents. Transit’s biggest hurdles are funding and connectivity. We must work with the Region and the Greater Toronto Transit Authority to provide access to transit for Caledon residents." Tony Viola "I would love to see Caledon be part of a GTA transit strategy but I think it would cost too much of our taxpayers' money. My belief is that we need to lobby our Provincial and Federal Governments for funds needed to see Via Rail come to Caledon. Unfortunately, that cost would be estimated to be $160 million, meaning the best way for now would be to partner with a private firm at no cost to taxpayers. This would allow us to revisit our enhanced transit needs in 10 or more years when Caledon's population has grown." Richard Whitehead "It is essential that Caledon have a voice on the new body as it works through the question. Bolton needs GO rail links soon. Go bus service must be expanded in the hwy 50 and hwy 10 corridor with connections to Airport Road. There is a growing demand for some for of local transit to exist and that might be better achieved through some private venture or a private public arrangement." Area Council Candidates: Nick DeBoer No reply. Don McNeil "Superb! It is my belief that “a GTA Transit Strategy” is yet to appear. The entire “GTA Plan” seems (and sounds) as though the “Fiberals” are making this up at lunch on the back of an envelope (or napkin)." "If a “GTA Strategy” did exist, Caledon, clearly, could offer routes to Orangeville, Alliston and Newmarket. Caledon could easily become an integral part of any transit system adapted to ease daily road traffic and improve the manner that people use to leave Caledon." |
