Municipal Election Watch - 2006 Replies to questions from the regional and area council candidates for Ward 2 listed in alphabetical order by last name: Q6: There appears to be a lack of housing appropriate for senior citizens and single persons. How do you propose to address this gap? Regional Council Candidates: Donna Cragg "Assess need and establish target numbers and work with developers to ensure that suitably designed housing is included in any future development and that the areas provide the necessary services health and recreation to support both types of lifestyles. An idea may be to tie a specific pastime to an area that would be attractive to seniors or attractive to singles as a way of unifying a segment of an overall community. As the population ages, work through the Region to provide in community assisted living opportunities and ample services for our seniors so that they do not have to leave their communities." Dave Tatla No reply. Allan Thompson "Caledon is a beautiful community that many people have chosen to move to make it their home, but as our seniors age a deficit within our community is available and affordable housing options for senior residents. This was one of the areas that I identified within my election platform as an area that needs attention and as a community we should plan to address this deficit to allow our residents the option of staying within their home community when the time comes that they are ready to downsize from their current property. We need to vigorously engage in discussions with developers so they recognize this as a real and pressing need and as a municipality we need to create the environment for these types of developments." Area Council Candidates: Gord McClure No reply Stephen Townsend "I definitely believe there must be an appropriate level of housing available for all residents. Any new residential development must consider housing to attract new residents to the area, plus the transition of existing residents to other styles of housing. This would include: farmers moving to non-farming homes; children leaving the nest to start their own home; new young families; provision of senior facilities, including senior communities, retirement and nursing homes; just to name a few." |
