Municipal Election Watch - 2006

Replies to questions from the regional and area council candidates for Ward 3 & 4 listed in alphabetical order by last name:

Q6: There appears to be a lack of housing appropriate for senior citizens and single persons.  How do you propose to address this gap?

Regional Council Candidates:

Nancy Stewart

"The Caledon East Seniors addition is a much needed first step forward to provide housing appropriate for seniors. We need to continue the development of seniors housing, as well as ensure the supply of a variety of different housing types such as bungalows, condominium units and townhouses appropriate to senior citizens and single persons."

Tony Viola

"As you know we have been in this mess for the longest time.  Council has failed to address these issues properly and we need focused attention by attentive representation to get it done.  Adding an enhanced commercial tax base to an existing surplus I'm positive we'd have the money required to make appropriate senior and single person housing a reality, and I've made this action a priority in my campaign."

Richard Whitehead

"The current seniors expansion and Abbeyfield need to move forward to completion as soon as possible. The region of Peel needs to identify and build the next facility in Caledon during the next term to meet the growing needs for seniors and special needs housing."

Area Council Candidates:

Nick DeBoer

No reply.

Don McNeil

"Caledon will have to continue to struggle with planners to offer appropriate sites for our seniors and avoid a senior “ghetto”."

"As well, we could develop senior communities that provide special services related to an aging population.  Homes could be a smaller size that would provide a spacious and comfortable independent lifestyle without the heavy burden of outside maintenance.  Within this community, a larger “living” facility could be built.  Within this building, seniors have the option of “independent” apartment living (with the convenience of onsite “assistance” personnel) or “assisted” living apartments.  Recreational (drop-in) facilities and medical facilities (doctor, dental offices) could also be part of the overall plan."

"Many of our single people end up cocooned with their parents.  Solutions likely exist but indeed will be full of discussions."
