Municipal Election Watch - 2006

Replies to questions from the regional and area council candidates for Ward 3 & 4 listed in alphabetical order by last name:

Q7: The Town of Caledon has committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions       from their operations and to helping members of community do the same. What is your vision for a community energy plan?

Regional Council Candidates:

Nancy Stewart

"The energy sector is a very dynamic one, but we must remember that it is driven primarily by price. My personal commitment is that Caledon as a community will continue to plant thousands of trees every year ensuring the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. No matter what the price of oil, gas, solar, wind or water generation we can do our part by planting trees, trees, and more trees."

Tony Viola

"My vision for a community energy plan is twofold.  First, I believe we need to immediately begin looking at the option of incinerating our garbage to create energy.  This technology is available now and works towards solving two significant issues facing Caledon - our waste and our high cost of energy.  Second, I would look to work with our energy suppliers to implement a tiered rate system within our town.  This rate system would reward those who save energy with lower costs, encouraging everyone to be intelligent and conscious of their energy use and needs."

Richard Whitehead

"We need to set clear and manageable targets and programs with sufficient incentives and public education that reduce overall emissions by 25% within 15 years. To be supportable this program will need to be multi-governmental with hard links to the public and the private sector."

Area Council Candidates:

Nick DeBoer

No reply.

Don McNeil

"We must reduce Greenhouse emissions globally.  Caledon is a bit player in the entire operation…"

"What tactic will we use to ask our Caledon citizens to reduce their use of automobiles, tractors, lawn mowers, ski-doos?  They live that way and resent Government telling them what to do.  Likely, unless our citizens support any move, they would have to agree to the terms."

"Possibly, global health concerns and the ozone layer problem will lead to increased worry and a solution will be found."
