Step Up to Kyoto
Some people say Canada shouldn’t ratify the Kyoto Protocol because it’s too tough. We don’t see it that way. Take any one of the actions listed below and reduce your emissions by 1 tonne or more. This is the target set by our federal government for individuals.

Turn off your desktop computer for 11 hrs a day.
Costs nothing and results in $140 in energy savings and a 1 tonne reduction in emissions per year.
Purchase renewable wind energy by buying two Green Tags per year.
Costs $150 but reduces smog and saves 1.7 tonnes of emissions per year.
Have an Energuide audit of your home’s energy efficiency and follow up on the recommendations.
Costs $100 to $200 for the audit and about $2,000 in repairs, but can reduce your energy bill by 40% or $800 per year, and reduces annual emissions by 1 tonne or more.
Replace 4 indoor lights with compact florescent light bulbs and two outdoor lights with motion detector lights.
Costs $85 but results in $140 in energy savings and a 1.1 tonne emission reduction.
Reduce your car’s emissions by: a) driving 80 fewer kilometres per week, OR
b) keep your tires inflated and your car tuned up, reduce your car idling by 10 minutes per day and adhere to the speed limit.
Costs nothing and saves $325 in gasoline and a 1 tonne reduction in emissions.
Plant 100 trees by 2008
Costs $100 but saves 1 tonne of emissions per year.
Bonus: Have two friends “Step Up to Kyoto”
Costs nothing and results in 2 fewer tonnes of emissions per year.
