Weedgee Kidz

Who are Weedgee Kidz?

Weedgee Kidz are youth who volunteer their time to help keep Caledon green and healthy.  Co-ordinated by Team Leaders and managed by the Caledon Countryside Alliance and Healthy Lawns, Healthy People, the Weedgee Kidz program (PDF) exists to help people in Caledon reduce their Ecological Footprint by getting their lawns off ‘drugs’ and to adhere effectively to the Healthy Horticultural Landscapes By-law which came into effect on May 1, 2004.

What service does the program offer?

It isn’t always easy to switch to organic lawn care, so the Weedgee Kidz program has been developed to help out.

From April to October the Weedgee Kidz are out in the community educating residents on alternatives to synthetic pesticides and fertilizers for lawn care and demonstrating organic gardening techniques to interested homeowners.  You may have seen us pulling dandelions in your neighbourhood this past summer or tried some dandelion ice cream at our Dandelion Festival.

From November to March the Weedgee Kidz offer to arrange talks about lawn care to interested community groups.  They are also standing by to answer questions that you may have regarding the care of your lawn so that you are well prepared for the growing season.

How does going organic reduce my impact?

By moving to organic lawn care, you are reducing your impact on the natural environment and decreasing the energy requirements to maintain your lawn.  Organic lawn care focuses on removing unwanted plants by using natural remedies and preventative measures for treatment.
