Sunday Hikes
Welcome to the Caledon Countryside Alliance's (CCA) seventh walking season. Each Sunday morning from October to April, a group of between 10 and 25 people meet for walks in and around the Caledon area. The terrain of the 2-3 hour hikes ranges from flat to hilly to everything in between, and many hikes are followed by a visit to the local pub or restaurant. Walking messages are sent out mid-week with details for that Sunday's walk and, as in past years, we welcome input from those of you who would like to share your favourite hike with the group.
If you are interested, please send an email to hikers and we will make sure that you receive weekly messages for the rest of the walking season. If you know of anyone else who may be interested in joining the hikes on a regular basis, please ask them to visit us at CCA or email us for membership information.
We look forward to sharing your ideas and countryside for another hiking season.
Cheers,
Jan

'Tis the season to be festive and to feast, so let's
get started. Janet and Walt have kindly invited us back
for yet another lunch at their house after this Sunday's
hike, which they will lead through the wilds of Forks
Park. Janet and Walt will be providing nibblies including
sandwich fixings and Walt's famous brownies.
Parking is available along Forks of the Credit Road just east of the Dominion Street bridge. We'll meet there at 10 and make our way into Brimstone to pick up our leaders, carrying on into the park from there. See you Sunday. |

It is my new policy to never get lost two weeks in a row,
so we're sticking close to home. Please meet at the
rail trail on Chinguacousy Road between Boston Mills and
Olde Base Line Road. We'll walk north on Ching to access the
Bruce Trail side trail that takes us onto the Badlands
property. We'll skirt the clay hills and end up on
Creditview, walk south to Boston Mills, Boston Mills to the
trail and then back to our cars. In other words, we'll be
walking on the road for about half the walk.
I have pictures with Santa afterwards but lunch can be Terra Cotta Inn, Coffee Bean, Flap Jacks or wherever your stomachs lead you. It is the annual Egg Nog Jog at Terra Cotta this weekend if anyone would like to do that instead of the walk : ) See you Sunday at 10. |
| Dec. 4, 2005 |
We're off to Hockley for a walk that Don took us on a
couple of years back. I am so unsure of this hike (the bad
news) that I'm actually bringing the map (the good news).
Assume a hilly hike because the contour lines are nestled
closely together, especially along the Snell Loop. If Don is
with us, we're sure to find our way.
Parking can be found on 3rd Line EHS about 1 km north of Hockley Road. To get there, take highway 10 north through Orangeville until you hit Hockley Road. Go east... 3rd Line EHS is the third line in from highway 10. Go north to the parking area. I think we'll be out for about 2-2.5 hours. See you at 10:00am on Sunday. |
| Nov. 27, 2005 |
Apologies for the late notice. This week, please follow
Nikki and her nose around Glen Haffy for about two hours
of up and down. Because of the snow we have and the rain
that's forecasted, I can't predict footing so come prepared.
Take Airport Rd and turn east onto Coolihan's Sideroad. Coolihan's heads into the valley with parking along the right hand side of the road... you'll see the stile that leads into Glen Haffy on the north side of the road. This is a great hike and I'm not sure if we got around to doing it last year so enjoy. Meet at 10 a.m. as usual.

The hike this Sunday is a special one. We'd like to
recognize one of our long time members and loyal hikers:
Judy Charbonneau. Judy died a year ago on Nov. 15, 2004.
Since Terra Cotta was her favourite place to hike, we'll
meet where the rail trail crosses Winston Churchill Blvd. at
10am. Afterwards, we'll head over to the Pub at the
Terra Cotta Inn for lunch. If you know of friends of Judy's who can't hike but would be interested in coming for lunch, please tell them to meet us in the Pub at 12 noon on Nov. 20. If you know you are coming for lunch, please let me know at nross@woodrising.com. I'd like to let the Terra Cotta Inn know approximate numbers. So please come out to hike and enjoy the day on Sunday. | Nov. 13, 2005 |
Will Roberty will be leading this Sunday's hike which
starts at highway 24 (Charleston Sideroad) and McLaren Road.
This hike takes the Bruce Trail north along the unopened
McLaren road allowance and you can continue to the
Alton/Grange property if time permits and Will says so : )
Parking is available at the trailhead in a small parking area on the north side of highway 24 at the top of McLaren. Please meet at 10 a.m. Because we use the Bruce Trail so often on our Sundays out, don't forget you can join the Bruce Trail Association for an annual fee of $50. It helps the BTA to secure new land for the trail and helps the individual clubs continue work on their existing trails. |

Interestingly, I was thinking the Dingle for Sunday
and when I checked what we were doing this time last year...
we were doing the Dingle. I'm not sure what that means but
let's do it again. I would like to try a few new walks
including the agreement forest by Tottenham and the one off
Centreville but I haven't walked them yet so we have to do
same old. Dingle is not particularly hilly and we should be
out for about 2 hours.
See you at Innis Lake Road just north of Finnerty Sideroad (Innis Lake is one road east of Airport). We will head north onto the road allowance and make that first left hand turn into the wilds of East Caledon. A fair chunk of this walk is on the road on the return. See you at 10 a.m. Sunday. |
| Oct. 30, 2005 |
Sunny and 15 degrees forecast for this Sunday...
perfect hiking weather. We are going to meet at the dead
end of Boston Mills Road and march west from there. This
hike does have some tricky footing due to the rocks along
the path, and fallen leaves hiding roots and rock always
means at least one trip for me. If you haven't been out, we look forward to seeing you. The hike should take about 2 hours with only a small amount of road work along Heritage Road. See you at 10 on Sunday. The dead end of Boson Mills Road is just west of Mississauga Road. Ample parking is available on the south side of the road. |
| Oct. 23, 2005 |
We are going to meander around the paths of the
Cheltenham Badlands along with the many many tourists
that continue to visit the site to see the red clay hills
against the leafy fall backdrop. We'll meet at the dead end top of Chinguacousy Road north of Olde Base Line Road. Please do not block the gate to the houses at the top. We will head down and onto the Bruce Trail blue trail unless it is not appropriate walking on the sensitive trail. Regardless, we will be doing road walking so please come prepared (bring a leash if you need). 10 am Sunday. Top of Chinguacousy. |

Season Opener!!! It is that time of year again...
the leaves drop, the weather cools and we start hiking. This
Sunday, October 16, marks the first hike of the 2005/2006
CCA hiking season and we welcome everyone. As in the
past, we do ask that hikers support the Caledon Countryside
Alliance which puts on the hikes every Sunday from October
to April. |
| May 1, 2005 |
The season finale. We are going to do something
a little different for our last hike... we've done it
before but not for a few years. With our new garbage
picker-uppers on 'staff' it's the perfect way to end the
hiking season. |
| Apr. 24, 2005 |
As we do every year, we will be wandering along the
trails of the Palgrave Conservation Area looking for
unsuspecting wildflowers. No prior knowledge or
experience is necessary -- just an interest in meeting
spring ephemerals. If you have a wildflower guide, please
bring it along and the birds are coming back so bring
binoculars too if you are interested in catching some on the
wing. Because we are looking at things, this tends to be a slow walk with plenty of stopping and looking down. Be forewarned it is not a march. Please meet at 10 a.m. at the north end of Duffy's Lane in the parking lot. Because Duffy's Lane is broken up by Albion Hills, you must go north on Duffy's from Patterson Sideroad. From highway 50 area -- Take highway 50 to Patterson and go west one road to Duffy's. From Caledon East area -- Take Airport, Centreville, Gore or Humber Station north to Patterson and go east to Duffy's. Yes, we've had snow in the past for the wildflower walk but the weather web says not this year. Instead, we may have rain |
| Apr. 17, 2005 |
As we wind down the '04/'05 walking season, we must get in
one of the oldies but goodies, Scottsdale Farm. You
can count on this hike taking 2.5 hours and there are
some hilly sections as we head in and out of the river
and creek valleys. The footing can be tricky due to typical
spring conditions, but I think I can promise no more snow.
Take 9th Line (second Line west of Winston Churchill) south from Balinifad Road for 3.7 km to 27 Sideroad. You will see the Silver Creek Valley ed centre at the corner on your right. Turn right onto 27 Sideroad and continue for about 0.3 km, and over the bridge to parking on the roadside. You will see the trail entrance on the north side. There will be two more scheduled walks this year. Next week will be the wildflower walk in Palgrave and the following Sunday will be the finale in Caledon East on May 1st. We will be taking advantage of the Fair Trade festival while there before saying our tearful goodbyes. See you Sunday. 10 a.m. |
| Apr. 10, 2005 |
I have located the last bit of significant snow in Caledon
and we are headed right for it. Please meet at Humber
Station where the rail trail crosses the road (between
Old Church and Patterson Sideroad). We will walk east and
enter Albion Hills for a spin along the trails. It is
snowy. It is wet. It has some hills. But it was beautiful
last night and I recommend joining me. There is an adventure
race scheduled at the park so be prepared to bump into
people running with maps and compasses. After last week's attempts at full blown winter in April, I think this weekend's weather is supposed to be nice. Just a reminder that when the weather is bad, I make all attempts to be at the designated meeting spot (of course depending on the conditions, the possibility exists that I won't get there). In times of bad weather, please make the decision that best suits you... there's always the next hike. See you at 10 on Sunday. Cheers, Jan |
| Apr. 3, 2005 |
For a treat we will hike in Hockley this week and
then lunch at the Woodside. We will be making
reservations so please email Jan to let her know if you
intend to come and she will reserve for that number. Jan hiked the trail Monday, Mar 28th and because it is in and out of the forest, there is still quite a bit of snow cover. As always at this time of year, the footing can be slick or muddy so be prepared for everything. The hike is not long, about 4.5 - 5 km, but is quite hilly as the trail makes its way into the the river valley. As with things that go down, they must come back up so be prepared for a hilly trek. Please meet on Hockley Valley Road, 5 km east of highway 10 at 10:30. You will see 2nd Line EHS on the south side of the road and the Bruce Trail sign on the north side. Parking is available on the north side of the road. You can also come in from Airport Road. As you may know the trail opens with a steep section from the road. As mentioned earlier, it was fine Monday but with the warm temperatures and rain in the forecast, this part might be treacherous. Be prepared. |
| Mar. 20, 2005 |
This week is a mystery walk!!! Will has offered to
lead the group on a walk that we have not done before. The
walk is part trail, with quite a bit of road so the footing
should be good. Also, you must pay for parking at Forks
Park (which is fine.... parking helps pay for our parks)
so have change on hand. Have a great walk! There will be no
organized hike on Easter Sunday but we will see you again on
April 3rd to celebrate Daylight Saving Time. Will's directions: Meet at the Forks of the Credit Provincial Park parking lot off McLaren Rd. south of highway # 124 at 10:00 . We'll head down McLaren for a spectacular escarpment view , shortly pick up the Bruce Trail , head east , cross highway # 10 through the new Bruce Trail tunnel . We'll return and go along Puckering Lane back to the parking lot . Rain or shine it'll be a good time . First day of spring . |
| Mar. 13, 2005 |
Richard Paterak will be leading this Sunday's hike through the Alton Grange property. Please park at the northwest corner of Porterfield and Beech Grove.
To get there: - take highway 10 north to Hwy 24 west - west on Hwy 24 to Willoughby north - Willoughby north to Beech Grove Sideroad west
- west on Beech Grove until you hit Porterfield
(west of Willoughby). Porterfield runs between Beech Grove
and Main St/highway 36 (where it curves north to
Orangeville). |
| Mar. 06, 2005 |
This week let's do the southerly portion of the Humber
Valley Trail. Although we can do a loop, we will
probably stick to the trail and do an out-and-back. This
pretty trail is up and down and should take us about 2
hours. I am not sure of the footing so do bring your
walking sticks and spider feet. Please meet at 10:00am on the south side of Castledurg Sideroad, just east of the bridge. If you hit Duffy's Lane going east, you've gone too far. I think the next road heading west is Humber Station... if you hit that, you've gone too far. I have no idea about the footing and had contemplated, but can't face, a road walk. Do come prepared for some slick sections. Also, the Humber Valley Trail Association puts a lot of effort and time into their trail and if you are not already a member, you might want to show your support by becoming one. |
| Feb. 27, 2005 |
Anders has kindly taken the lead on this Sunday's hike in
the vicinity of Old Base Line and Creditview. More
importantly, he has invited us back to his house after
for tea and coffee. Get out your recipe books and bake
up something to to go with the warm drinks. You can leave
your baked goods in the car and we can pick them up after. Parking is available on the west side of Creditview Road north of Olde Base Line. Please park north of Anders' driveway (yellow house at the corner of Creditview and Old Base). See you there on Sunday at 10:00am. Don't forget to bring something tasty to share. |
| Feb. 20, 2005 |
What to do, what to do. The trails are slick and the
forecast is for snow and colder temperatures which won't
help the footing.
Rather than go to Hockley as Jan had planned, we will
scamper around Forks Park because Jan knows the trails
and hopefully can keep us out of danger. So.... please
meet at Forks of the Credit Road and Dominion Street at
10 a.m. on Sunday. Parking is available on the wide
shoulder on the north side of the road (if you go under the
railway overpass, you've gone too far). We'll enter the park
through Brimstone and take the new trail past the falls and
up. |
| Feb. 13, 2005 |
Nikki Ross will be leading the group through the cliffs
of Mono on Sunday and then marching people over to the
Mono Cliffs Inn for some grub (I do not think she
will be picking up the tab, but ask her). Please note that
due to the Inn's hours of operation, the hike will start
at 11 a.m. Of interest, I had a look at the hikes from
this time last year and we were doing a lot of road walking
due to the snow. I'm a big fan of winter, but it is nice to
have trail access for hiking this year. Please meet at the community hall in downtown Mono Centre. I have included directions from both highway 10 and Airport road below. 1. From highway #10 north of Orangeville, turn right (east) at Camilla onto Mono Centre Road. Follow this road to Mono Centre. You will see the community centre on the right hand side. Tennis courts are visible. 2. From the town of Mono Mills at highway #9 and Airport Road, go north on Airport Road for approximately 13 km. Turn left (west) at County Road 8 (also called Mono Centre Road). Follow Mono Centre Road to Mono Centre (6 km). At the "T" intersection in Mono Centre, turn left and you will see the community centre on your left. Cheerio and remember 11 a.m. start time! |
| Feb. 6, 2005 |
This week's hike will take in the Alton Side Trail
starting from the top of McLaren Road at highway 24. While
we usually park in the parking lot at the trail head on the
north side of 24, it may not have been ploughed so parking
on the side of McLaren across from the entrance to the dump
and recycling centre may be the best option. This week we have another guest hike leader and Alton Side Trailer... Richard Paterak. While it might be tempting to ask Richard all those burning Town questions, just remember that it is the weekend and he is our guest : ) I am away again but wish you a wonderful hike and fine aprés walk fare at the Eggshell or wherever you end up. Enjoy the day... it's calling for unbelievable weather! 10 a.m. Be there. |
| Jan. 30, 2005 |
This weekend's hike will take in the "Hole-in-the-wall"
and the Black Creek Side Trail by Limehouse. The hike will start at the intersection of Halton Road 43 and Halton 5th line just west of Trafalgar Rd. (Park on the 5th Line. Halton Road 43 is the first road north of Georgetown on Hwy 7). The trail proceeds south through the Limehouse Conservation Area and continues between Halton 4th and 5th Lines in open fields. When we reach the 4th Line after 3.9 km, we double back on ourselves for about 2 km. When we enter the Conservation Area again, we drop down into the Black Creek valley for another 1.6 km. The hike should take about 2 hours and the weather is looking like it should at this time of year.... wintery. Joan Jory has kindly offered to lead us through, between, and down, so come on out on Sunday at 10 a.m. to experience this part of our 'neighbourhood'. Thanks Joan. |
| Jan. 23, 2005 |
I've been stewing about the footing so have settled on a
route that doesn't include ups and downs. We will wander
along the trailway and into Ken Whillans and back. This
hike will probably take about 1.5 hours and Elizabeth has
requested lunch at the Coffee Bean afterwards. Please meet at Kennedy Road where the rail trail crosses (north of Olde Base Line) at 10 o'clock. This section of the rail trail is my favourite and they have put up some interpretive signs so that we can turn this into a true educational experience. Be aware that the shoulder of the road might look wider than it really is, so park carefully. See you Sunday. |
| Jan. 16, 2005 |
This Sunday we are going to walk in the Silver Creek
Conservation Area, putting together a couple of Bruce
Trail loops and a bit of main trail for good measure. Please meet on 9th Line, 3.8 km south of Balinifad Road. You will see the Silver Creek Ed Center on your right at 27 Sideroad. Parking is available on the right side of the road just across the way from the center. Most of you will recognize this area from the Scottsdale Farm hike that we do each year. We will be taking the trails on the left hand side of the road and I would estimate that we will cover between 6 and 8 km. I walked it last weekend and like most hiking in the winter, the trails can be slippery. There are some rocky bits and steeper sections, so please wear appropriate footwear and I would recommend a walking stick if you use one or have access to one (I have two if anyone wants to try one). See you there at 10 a.m. |
