Sunday Hikes

Welcome to the Caledon Countryside Alliance's (CCA) seventh walking season. Each Sunday morning from October to April, a group of between 10 and 25 people meet for walks in and around the Caledon area. The terrain of the 2-3 hour hikes ranges from flat to hilly to everything in between, and many hikes are followed by a visit to the local pub or restaurant. Walking messages are sent out mid-week with details for that Sunday's walk and, as in past years, we welcome input from those of you who would like to share your favourite hike with the group.

If you are interested, please send an email to hikers and we will make sure that you receive weekly messages for the rest of the walking season. If you know of anyone else who may be interested in joining the hikes on a regular basis, please ask them to visit us at CCA or email us for membership information.

We look forward to sharing your ideas and countryside for another hiking season.

Cheers,

Jan

Hike Date Hike Description
Dec 17, 2006 Jennifer and Rowan have offered to take us out for the last hike of 2006. Jan is not familiar with Mono Cliffs so come out and take advantage of two people who are.

Please meet at the dead end on the 2nd Line Mono, north out of the village of Mono Centre (do not turn right into the village when coming from highway 10... stay straight). Jennifer tells me we can park along the road there and head into the trail from the west side of the park.

Jan will reserve space at the Mono Cliffs Inn for après walk grub if you're so inclined. she'll need to hear from interested folk by Thursday.

Note: Jan will be out of town until the week of January 15th. If people would like to hike January 7th or 14th, please email her your hikes and she will broadcast to the group. Otherwise, we'll be back on trek Sunday January 21.
Dec 10, 2006 Ho ho ho. 'Tis the season because Janet and Walt have kindly opened their doors to us once again! How are we so lucky? Join our host and hostess for a walk up and down the drumlins/hills/mountains of Forks park, followed by good cheer and nibbles while draped over the furniture in front of the fire. Can't wait.

Please meet on Forks of the Credit Road at the Dominion Street bridge at 10 am. Parking is available there. We'll walk in, pick up our leaders and head out. Walt and Janet are generously providing us with lunch but feel free to contribute your own eats to the communal feast.

Rain, snow or shine. See you there.
Dec 03, 2006 We have a special guest from across the pond joining us this Sunday so we're keeping it local... to us that is. With all the rain, the footing will be mucky and potentially slick so bring your stick if you use one. We'll be walking along Quarry Road and up and down a meandering path before retracing our steps.

Please meet at the top of the Grange hill at 10 am. Either take Grange west from McLaughlin Road and stay left under graffiti bridge and up the hill to the top, or take Creditview to the top and hang a right on Grange (take it until you reach the top of the hill -- it says the road is closed for winter but winter is not here yet). Parking is best on the north side of Grange.
Nov 26, 2006 I'm on hiatus this weekend but am leaving you in the capable hands and feet of Nikki who is intent on marching you around Scottsdale Farm. Most of you will remember that this trail winds up and down right off the bat, continuing through a mature forest before crossing 8th Line and into Scottsdale. The majority of the hike occurs on the far side of the farm as you weave through beautiful forests and edge farmer's fields. The hike is a long one (approx 2.5 hours) but you can hop out near the end, saving yourself about 1/2 an hour.

Please meet on 27 Sideroad just west of 9th Line (Halton) (take 9th Line south from Ballinifad Road, also called 32 Sideroad, and turn right at Silver Creek Outdoor Ed Centre at the corner of 27 SR. Proceed over the heritage bridge; don't forget to go back and look at it). Parking is available on the south side of 27 Sideroad and you will see the stile and blue BTA trail markers on the north side.

10 am. Enjoy.

Nov 19, 2006 We've been pretty brave with the first few hikes so we're going to chill for this one and walk the rail trail to Cheltenham. As in the past, we will meet on Chinguacousy Road (between Boston Mills and Olde Base Line Road) where the trail crosses the road. We'll travel west past the village and head back via the road, stopping for a hot chocolate at the Cheltenham store. We'll make our way back along Station Road to Ching and back to our cars. This is a flat, well traveled meander that should take 1.5 to 2 hours.

See you Sunday at 10.

Nov 12, 2006 Off we go again, this time through Glen Haffy Conservation and Area and the Humber Valley. We will be meeting at our usual spot on Coolihans Sideroad.... take Airport Rd (south from highway 9 or north beyond highway 24) and turn east onto Coolihans Sideroad. Coolihans SR heads into the valley... you will see the stile that leads into Glen Haffy and the Bruce Trail markers (should be white) about 1 km along on the north side of the road -- parking is on the south side.

This hike has varied terrain so expect ups and downs as we wind through the valleys, and with all the rain, there may be some slippery spots. This is a long hike... about 10.5 km which is most likely a 2.5-3 hour trek. The great thing is that you can turn around and there are one or two who intend to do this.

This is an old Neilly Bird hike so we can all take a moment and send our hellos to Austria!

See you on Coolihans at 10 on Sunday.

Nov 5, 2006 I have good news for those of you who have followed me and my old maps around, sometimes at our peril. I have new maps and with new maps, come new adventures. Join me in neighbouring Halton for this Sunday's walk-about -- part trail, part road and part luck.

Please meet at 10 am at the southern most end of Tenth Line (Halton) where it dead ends at the CN tracks (rail line is alive so keep an eye/ear out). Tenth Line is one west of Winston Churchill Road. I assume the easiest route for most of us is to travel west on Old School Rd (turns into 22 Sideroad when you cross over to Halton) or west on Mayfield Road (turns into 17 Sideroad) to Tenth Line and then head south to the tracks and parking.

See you there, rain or snow (or shine).

Oct 28, 2006 Due to the bad weather, the location of the hike this week has been change from Pine River to Mississauga and Boston Mills.

Please meet west of Mississauga Road on Boston Mills. The hike is about two hours long and the footing is slick in places due to rock.

AND DON'T FORGET TO SET YOUR CLOCKS BACK SATURDAY NIGHT!

Last week was quite the return to the walks.   Soggy hats off to all of you who braved the rain and slippery conditions... troopers.

Every year we plan to do some hikes further afield, often cancelling because of poor road conditions.  So this year we're jumping right into the weather challenged areas so we can get to those beautiful trails.

First to be checked off the list is the Pine River Valley in Mulmur.  This river once powered the Dufferin Light and Power Company and though it is a shadow of it's former self, it's still a lovely river that flows through a magnificent valley.

The Pine River trail is a 7.2km loop that goes up and down through the valley. We're going to meet at 10 am at the corner of County Road 17 and Centre Road in Mulmur Township. We may leave a few cars there and then drive to a small parking area about 5 km away.

From Belfountain it will take a good 45 minutes. It would be a good idea to carpool for this one, but the drive is worth it.

  • If you take Airport Road, go north past Highway 89. When you come to Mansfield, turn left and head west until you come to Centre Road.
  • If you take Highway 10, go north through Primrose. Highway 10 goes left at Primrose but you want to go straight. The road becomes Prince of Wales. Stay on this road until you come to Country Road 17. Turn right and head east for one concession to Centre Road.

Last year we were scheduled to tackle this monster (looooooooooooooong hill at the end) on Superbowl Sunday but ended up with a snowstorm.  It's been at least 2 years since we've been, so come.  It'll be worth it.  We're worth it!

Oct 22, 2006 It's that time of year again.... hike, hike, hike... on Sundays at least. As in past years, the CCA hikes will take place in and around the lovely trails of Caledon and slightly beyond. We'll meet Sunday mornings at 10 am and waddle about for 2-3 hours.

For the first walk, we'll do the usual.... Devil's Pulpit. Due to the late start this year, we won't see the amazing displays of colour in the valley but I want to take advantage of the Forks Road closure... we can meander aimlessly and not fear for our lives.

Please meet at the top of Creditview Road, just north of The Grange Sideroad. We will walk along the Bruce Trail, down the Pulpit, over the tracks and onward to Forks Road. From there we'll head east to McLaren and back up the escarpment to The Grange and back to our cars. This is quite a long walk but you still have 5 days to get fit. Come out for all or part of it, but do come out.

See you there. 10 am.

June 10, 2006 On Saturday, June 10, 2006 from 10am to 2pm there will be a Community Celebration hosted by CVC to celebrate their newest property acquisition. It is being called the Upper Credit River Conservation Area. When it was purchased it was known as the Safari property.

It is located on the eastside of Regional road #136 a few hundred metres north of the turn off for the gravel portion of Porterfield Road. The property entrance is located immediately south of the railway tracks that cross #136 about 1 km below Highpoint Road.

On June 10 the celebration will start with Community Partners Tree Planting at 10 am, Appreciation ceremonies at 12 pm, followed by a BBQ lunch at 12:30. There will be a nature hike and electrofishing demonstration at 1:30 pm.

This is a beautiful property traversed by more than a kilometre of the Credit River. In the future it is hoped that the Credit Valley Trail extending from Lake Ontario to Orangeville will pass through this property. All residents are invited to take advantage of this opportunity to see and walk this property. You and your family are certain to find it enjoyable.

Weedgee Kidz Walk for Prevention

Walk 5km for the Weedgee Kidz

May 28, 2006 at 8:00am

(details)

May 7, 2006 This will be our last hike of the season and thanks to long timers Al and Mike for offering to lead.

Please meet at 10 am at the community centre parking lot in Mono Centre by the tennis courts. We will be walking through the village and looping our way back to the Inn for food... our continued theme.

Take highway 10 north to the flashing light at Camilla. Go east and follow the road around until you see tennis courts on your right, just before you hit the main drag of Mono Centre.

Apr. 30, 2006 Don't forget the Ken Whillans clean up this Sunday at 10 am. CVC contacted Jan and asked if we would be willing to help them out again and because we've been such good garbage pickers in the past, we must share our talents. CVC will provide garbage bags but please bring your own gloves and pick-up-garbage-sticks if you have them.

Please meet in the Ken Whillans parking lot on the west side of highway 10 just north of the rail trail. 10 am. Neil and I will have a simple BBQ afterwards for anyone who is interested in eating. Remember, eating is the common theme for the remaining hikes.

See you there, rain or shine, cold or hot, willing or not.

Apr. 23, 2006 The theme of the last few walks is... food. It's all about eating which we will do this weekend at the Eggshell restaurant, the following weekend after is the Ken Whillans clean up and the final Sunday May 7 at some as yet undecided location.

Please meet at 10 am at Dominion Street and Forks of the Credit Road. We will walk into Brimstone where we will pick up our co-leaders Janet and Walt, and off we will go through Forks Park intent on getting to our breakfast at the Eggshell. We'll then walk it off by heading back. Count on 2.5-3 hours because of the eating in the middle.

Apr. 16, 2006 Easter Sunday sees us walking along the roads of Glen Williams with a stop at the bakery for some sustenance. This is a shorter walk but does include a couple of substantial road hills. Once you sit down with a warm cup of something, it'll all be worth it.

Parking is available along Old School Road just west of Winston Churchill. Please meet at 10:30 to make sure the bakery is open when we get there. This is a leash walk for dogs

Apr. 9, 2006 Al Axworthy has kindly offered to lead the pack on Sunday while I fly around ruining the planet (that is for my conscience, Will). Al has chosen the Alton out and back that starts at highway 24 and goes north towards Alton. If you remember, it has a couple of ups and downs as it meets and then follows the river through the cedar forest and then back up to carry on beside farmers' fields. The footing may be soggy/mucky in sections.

Parking is available in the small parking lot at the trail head on highway 24 at the north end of McLaren. If it is too wet, you can park on the side of McLaren Road.

Apr. 2, 2006 Please meet at 10 am (new time!) on Humber Station Road where the rail trail crosses the road (north of Old Church and south of Patterson Sideroad). Humber Station is east of Gore Road and runs north/south. Parking is available on the shoulders. Then just follow me as we meander through the mucky Caledon countryside.

Mar. 26, 2006 This week let's do the southerly portion of the Humber Valley Trail. Although we can do a loop, we will probably stick to the trail and do an out-and-back. This pretty trail is up and down and should take us about 2 hours. I am not sure of the footing (except for mucky) so bring stuff that helps you stay upright.

Please meet at 10 on the south side of Castledurg Sideroad, just east of the bridge. If you hit Duffy's Lane going east, you've gone too far. I think the next road heading west is Humber Station... if you hit that, you've gone too far.

Mar. 19, 2006 Meet Nikki to do the Scottsdale Farm walk. This walk is a little longer than average and the footing can be slick on the rocky sections of the trail. If memory serves, there are a couple of places where you can pull out and turn back so if you aren't up to the full walk, come for part.

Take 9th Line south from Balinifad Road (about 3.8 km). You will see the Silver Creek Ed Center on your right at 27 Sideroad. Turn onto 27 Sideroad and park on the far side of the beautiful old bridge. You'll recognize it when you get close to it if you don't already from this message.

Mar. 12, 2006 Kate Ross has agreed to lead you through one of her favourite spots, the Terra Cotta Conservation Area. She is keeping the exact route a secret so just follow in her footsteps. Please meet at 10 am in the Terra Cotta parking lot. Turn west into the conservation area from Winston Churchill, continue past the abandoned park hut, and park in the parking lot behind it. The terrain is rolling and may be mucky if the forecasted rain shows up.

There is a $5 fee and while it may not be enforced, it is appropriate to support our conservation authority and our beautiful conservation.

Mar. 5, 2006 Join me for a lovely walk between 10th and 9th Lines (for reference, 9th Line is Erin's main street if you were further north). Please park on the west side of 10th Line in the valley across the road from the big house with the swans. You'll know it if you've been and if you haven't, you can't miss it. The valley is south of Ballinifad Sideroad, also known as 32 Sideroad (runs east/west between Winston Churchill Blvd and Trafalgar Rd).

See you there at 10.

Feb. 26, 2006 This Sunday we will be traveling the flats of Mono Cliffs Park. Again, there is no guarantee for the footing but Elizabeth and Don walked it the other weekend and it was good. In other words, be prepared for anything. We won't go up top so there won't be lots of hills.

Please meet in the parking lot on the 3rd Line north of the Mono Centre Road. If coming in from #10, go east on Mono Centre Road, past the Mono Cliffs Inn/Pub (the road twists and turns). Turn left onto the 3rd Line -- the parking lot is a short distance on the left hand side.

If coming from Airport Road, turn west onto Mono Centre Road and continue past 5th Line and 4th Line. Turn right onto 3rd Line and continue to the parking lot.

Note that if you were coming specifically for the fine fare at the Inn and not our company, you will be sorely disappointed. The Inn is closed until the first of March but for those who want food, we can find something.

See you at the parking lot at 10.

Feb. 19, 2006 Thank you to Anders for taking on the job of leading us around Belfountain.

Please meet on the curve of Mississauga Rd just south of Belfountain by the old cement grain tower (there used to be a big white barn there as well). The hike starts from the south side of the road where an old driveway is visible. This hike has no large hills and even though the footing seems unpredictable, no big tumbles will occur due to hills.

Thank you to the private land owner who has allowed us to use this trail. Please keep a close eye on dogs if the cows are out.

Please meet at 10. Enjoy!

Feb. 12, 2006 We will hike into Cheltenham along the rail trail and back along the road on Sunday.

Please meet at the rail trail where it crosses Chinguacousy between Olde Base Line and Boston Mills. We will walk via the rail trial to Mill Street and then get on the road to the Cheltenham General Store for a hot chocolate before heading back via Station Road and Ching.

See you there. Rain or shine or snow. 10 am

Feb. 05, 2006 [Notice at 2006-02-04 20:00 - This hike has been cancelled due to poor weather conditions]

Please meet at 10am for this Sunday's hike through the Pine River valley in the Mulmur Hills. This river once powered the Dufferin Light and Power Company and though it is a shadow of it's former self, it's still a lovely river that flows through a magnificent valley.

It is a 7.2km loop that goes up and down through the valley. We're going to meet at the corner of County Road 17 and Centre Road in Mulmur Township. We may leave a few cars there and then drive to a small parking area about 5 km away. From Belfountain it will take a good 45 minutes to get to this hike. It would be a good idea to carpool for this one. But the drive is worth it.

* If you take Airport Road, go north past Highway 89. When you come to Mansfield, turn left and head west until you come to Centre Road.

* If you take Highway 10, go north through Primrose. Highway 10 goes left at Primrose but you want to go straight. The road becomes Prince of Wales. Stay on this road until you come to Country Road 17. Turn right and head east for one concession to Centre Road.

We'll be home just in time for Super Bowl!

Cheers,

Jan and Nikki

**Don't forget the Speaker Series tomorrow night at the SGI Centre.... Sustainable Fossil Fuels. Doors open at 7:30. $5 at the door.**

Jan. 29, 2006 Thanks very much to Anders for taking the lead this Sunday as you hike the Quarry Road between Grange and Chinguacousy. The trail is flat and with the warming trend they are promising us (again!), it might be wet in spots.

Come east off Mississauga on Grange, or turn right off Creditview where it ends (north of Olde Baseline Road) -- there is a road closed sign at the intersection of Creditview and Grange. Go about 1 km east on Grange to find parking at the top of the Grange hill (you will see a gate that can close off the road).

Meet at 10am. Since there is no nearby restaurant for a post-hike meal, Gaye and I will host a "bring a snack" party - we'll supply juice, tea, coffee, and clean, fresh Escarpment spring water.

Enjoy.

Jan. 22, 2006 The weather experts are calling for warm and wet days into the weekend so we will have to forgo our 20 km trek until we are promised nicer weather. Instead, we will do half trail, half road on Sunday and hopefully at least one of the two sections will be fine footing.

Please meet at 10 am on Coolihans Sideroad, about 1 km east of Airport Road. Coolihans is north of 124 (old 24 or Charleston Sideroad), south of Highway 9. On Coolihans, look for a stile and blue Bruce Trail sidetrail sign on your left and a white Bruce Trail sign on your right, and park there where the road widens slightly to accommodate cars.

This hike is shorter than usual, probably about 6 km. The terrain is rolling and we will head mostly downhill towards the road. The uphill road back to the cars is a bit of a climb.

Bring your crampons, YakTracks or other icy walking foot paraphernalia.

See you at 10:00am

Jan. 15, 2006 Happy New Year!!!

Hope you are refreshed and prepared to ease back into our Sunday walks. This Sunday we will be marching around the Alton Grange property. Don't be fooled by the spring-like weather we've had recently. The forecast for Sunday looks more seasonable and slippery footing might be the outcome...

We will enter the property near the corner of Porterfield (runs south from Queen St in Alton) and Beech Grove Sideroad (go east off 136 to Orangeville) so please park along the road there. See you at 10:00 am.
